Form I-90 is the form a green card holder uses to apply for green card renewal. Form I-90 is also known as an Application to Replace a Permanent Resident Card. This form is used to request a replacement green card if it has been lost, stolen, damaged, or if any of the information on the card needs to be updated or corrected.

When Should I Submit Form I-90?

How Do I Fill Out Form I-90?
Form I-90 can be filled out online on the USCIS website or by using a physical paper form. To ensure a smooth and accurate completion of the form, consider the following helpful tips:
- If a question does not apply to you, enter “N/A.”
- If the answer is 0, enter a zero or write “none.”
- If you fill out Form I-90 on paper, ensure all the information is accurate and type or write your replies in black ink.
Form I-90 Filing Fee
The current filing fee for Form I-90 as of June 2023 is $455. In addition to this fee, there is usually an additional $85 biometrics fee, bringing the total to $540. These payments are non-refundable. However, there are several situations where you may be exempt from paying any fees for your green card application:
- If USCIS granted you a green card, but you have yet to receive it, you may not have to pay any fees. However, certain conditions must be met:
- More than 30 days have passed since the green card was mailed to you and
- It was returned to USCIS as undeliverable, and
- You have not changed the address provided to USCIS.
- If errors on your green card were made by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), you are not required to pay any fees.
- You may be eligible for a fee waiver if you cannot afford the fees due to low income, financial hardship, or receiving public benefits. You must submit a separate form to apply for the fee waiver.
Additionally, if you have recently turned 14 within the last 30 days and your green card will expire when you reach 16, you will only need to pay the $85 biometrics fee.
Can I File USCIS Form I-90 Online?
Filing Form I-90 is possible online. However, you may be required to file by mail in some circumstances.
Filing online is recommended if any of the following situations apply to you:
- Your green card will expire within the next six months or has already expired.
- Your green card has been lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed.
- USCIS converted your immigration status to “green cardholder.” (for some instances like “Special Agricultural Workers”).
- You legally changed your name or other personal information.
- You possess an outdated or invalid version of your green card.
- You are a commuter living in Canada or Mexico but working in the United States.
- You used to have commuter status but now reside in the United States.
To file online, you can follow this process:
- Create or log in to your USCIS online account
- Complete Form I-90 online
- Upload the necessary supporting documents.
- Review and electronically sign the form.
- Pay the filing fees through Pay.gov.
- Submit the online application.
On the other hand, filing by mail is necessary if any of the following conditions apply:
- You obtained a 10-year green card before age 14, which expires after turning 16.
- USCIS issued your green card, but you never received it.
- The DHS made errors on your green card.
- You are applying for a fee waiver.
To file by mail, you need to:
- Print out a paper version of Form I-90
- Pay the filing fees using a check, money order, or a credit card payment form (Form G-1450)
- Include the required supporting documents.
- Mail your complete application package to USCIS.
How to Check Check Your I-90 Application Status
As of June 2023, the typical processing period for Form I-90 is 1.5 months to 1 year; for replacements, it is 5.5-13.5 months.
You will receive a confirmation letter from USCIS. The letter will include a 13-character receipt notice number. You can use this receipt number to track your I-90 application online.
To check your status online, follow these steps:
- Visit the USCIS tracking link.
- Enter your “Receipt Number.”
- Select “Check Status.”
What Happens After You Submit Form I-90?
USCIS will provide updates through the mail and your USCIS online account. These updates may include the following:
- A letter confirming receipt and acceptance of your application by USCIS.
- A biometrics appointment letter. This is usually sent within 1-2 weeks of USCIS. receiving your application. The letter details when and where to capture your fingerprints, photo, and signature.
- USCIS may require additional information or documents. If so, USCIS will send you a Request for Evidence (RFE) letter. It is important to respond by the deadline mentioned in the letter and submit the required files through your USCIS online account.
A decision letter will be mailed to inform you of your Form I-90 application status.
