What Are ICE Detention Centers?
ICE detention centers, also known as processing centers, are facilities where undocumented immigrants, including asylum seekers apprehended by either the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) or Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials, are kept pending the determination of their removal proceedings. Such individuals are detained to ensure they are present during the immigration proceedings of their case.
As provided for by the Immigration and Nationality Act, certain classes of aliens are subject to mandatory detention. However, for those that are not, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has the discretion to either detain or release them with conditions.
ICE typically considers whether the individual is a flight risk, a threat to the public, or national security. They may also consider humanitarian situations, e.g., where the potential detainee has a severe health condition.

Statistics reveal that the state of Texas held the highest number of detainees in the United States as of the beginning of 2023. Furthermore, Texas also has the highest number of ICE detention facilities in all states, as listed on the ICE website.

You can use the ICE detention facility locator to locate other immigration detention centers or the online detainee locator system to find a detainee. You will need to have the detainee’s full name, alias, date of birth, and so on when you call a detention center to make inquiries.
Also, you need to give the detainee’s alien registration number and a number where you can be reached if you get in touch to leave an urgent message.
